Falls the Shadows
Bogong Village is a small hamlet situated in an amazing landscape, but only shadows fall where there used to be a community. This work is a reflection on my time spent as Artist in Residence with the Bogong Centre for Sound Culture in May 2021. The connection formed with the empty cottages resonated strongly and moved me away from my usual subjects. The trees are still conversing, the birds continue their symphony and the river sings its songs. However, I experience only shadows of what used to be here – empty windows, a deck chair on a porch and flowers growing in gardens. What does the future hold? Will the wildness reclaim what once was here? Will decay delve deep into this place of shadows to make a tomb of the passing years. Look through the empty windows and sense the idea of past reality.
“Between the idea and the reality
Between the motion and the act
Falls the shadows”
T.S. Eliot from “The Hollow Men”
